Moving Costs in Athens: What Affects the Price

The first question almost every customer asks us is simple: “How much will it cost me?” The answer isn’t a single number, because two moves between homes of the same size can differ a lot. In this guide we explain openly how the cost of moving in Athens is worked out, what affects the price and how you can lower it without putting your belongings at risk.

How much does a move in Athens cost?

The price of a move within Athens depends mainly on five things: the volume of your belongings, the floors and the lift, access to the building, packing and the date. A studio costs much less than a three-bedroom home. For a first idea, the table shows where the cost starts for each type of home.

What determines the cost of a move

Every moving company prices a job on two basic measures: how many hours the team will work and how many trips the vehicle will need. All the factors below affect one or the other.

1. The volume of your belongings

Volume is the most important factor. A studio with a bed, a wardrobe, a sofa and 15 boxes fits easily in one truck and is done in a few hours. A three-bedroom home with bookcases, a dining set and a storeroom may need two trips and a bigger team. That’s why we ask for a furniture list or photos before we give a price.

2. Floors and the lift

Carrying things up and down the stairs takes more time and more physical work, especially with bulky furniture and appliances. That’s why there is a surcharge when one of the two addresses has no lift from the first floor up. If you have a small lift that furniture won’t fit in, mention it — in practice the large pieces will go by the stairs. You’ll find more in our guide to moving without a lift.

3. Access and parking

In central Athens, in Exarchia, Pangrati or Kypseli, parking is often the hardest part of the day. When the truck parks 50 metres from the entrance, every trip carrying a piece of furniture adds time. A reserved spot in front of the building can noticeably shorten your move.

4. Distance within Attica

Because we only serve Athens and Attica, distance matters less than you might think. A move from Pangrati to Chalandri and one from Piraeus to Kifisia differ mainly in driving time and in the traffic we meet on the way, not in the base price.

5. Packing and materials

You can pack yourself or leave the packing to our team. Professional packing costs extra, but it saves days of work and lowers the risk of damage to fragile items. Many customers choose a middle way: they pack clothes and books themselves and leave the kitchen, glasses and screens to us.

6. Date and time

Saturdays, the last days of the month and the months of July to September are the busiest periods, because they coincide with leases ending and the start of the academic year. A weekday in the middle of the month gives you more time slots and often a better price.

7. Special items

A piano, a safe, a marble dining table or a large aquarium needs special equipment and more people. These items are priced separately as part of our special item moves, so it’s important to mention them from the start.

How much does it cost to move a two-bedroom flat?

There is no single price for every two-bedroom flat. The cost depends on the amount of furniture, the floors, the lift and whether you need packing. The “2 Bedrooms” row in the table only shows where the price starts. For a first idea based on your own details, try the quick cost estimate. We give you the final price with a free written quote, based on a furniture list or a few photos, usually the same day.

Hidden charges: what to check in the quote

The cheapest quote isn’t always the best value. Before you accept a price, make sure the quote states in writing:

  • How many people will work and with what vehicle.
  • Whether taking furniture apart and putting it back together is included.
  • Whether blankets, stretch film and protective materials are included.
  • Whether there is a charge per floor or an extra charge for stairs.
  • What insurance cover there is and up to what amount.
  • What happens if the move takes longer than expected.
  • Whether the price includes VAT.

A serious moving company answers all of these without hesitation. If a quote is verbal or vague, ask for it in writing. For more advice, read our article on the 7 questions to ask every moving company.

How to lower the cost of your move

Most of the savings happen before the truck arrives. Follow these steps:

  1. Get rid of what you don’t need. Every piece of furniture you won’t use again costs moving time. Give it away, sell it or recycle it before the move.
  2. Pack non-fragile items yourself. Clothes, books, linen and toys go into boxes easily without any special technique.
  3. Choose a weekday. Avoid Saturdays and the end of the month if your schedule allows.
  4. Secure a parking spot. Talk to the building manager or your neighbours to keep the entrance clear.
  5. Give accurate details. An accurate furniture list prevents surprises and extra charges on moving day.
  6. Ask for a quote early. Two to three weeks ahead you have more choice of date and time.

Is a professional move worth paying for?

Many people think about renting a van and moving with friends. For a few things, that can work. For a whole home, though, the cost of the rental, fuel and materials — and above all the risk of injury or damage to furniture and shared areas — usually makes a professional home move the better deal. An experienced team does in four hours what would take you the whole weekend.

How much does a small move cost?

If you’re not moving a whole home but want to move a sofa, a fridge or a few pieces of furniture, the price is much lower than a full move. A small move is usually done with one truck and two people and takes one or two hours. You’ll find the indicative starting price in the last row of the table. The final price depends mainly on the floors and the weight of the item.

How to get an exact price

For a first idea, the quick cost estimate shows you in one minute where the price starts: you choose the type of home, floors, lift and extra services. The estimate is not a final price. Only the written quote gives the exact price: send us a quote request, with one click from the estimate or directly, and you’ll get a free written quote — usually within the same day. If you prefer, send us photos of your furniture on WhatsApp for an even more accurate price.
